Synopsis

1955. Tiny-town Asteroid City in the  desert of SW USA whose main attraction is a perfect crater formed by an asteroid hit millions of years ago holds an anual festival for child science nerds.

This time it is visited by an alien spaceship which descends to collect the asteroid, and then later to return it.

Actually this is a play being rehearsed and stage which we see behind the scenes.

Which is iteself being written by the playwright who we also see engaged in his creative processes.

Very Wes Anderson...

Summary

...but ultimately not very good. Strangely unsatisfying

Full review

Stylistically very like his previous (The French Dispatch)  but not nearly as engrossing. Possibly the mlieu was less interesting (France trumps the Arizona desert almost anytime), possibly the nested stories were less well integrated (the write, the rehersal and staging of the play, and the story told by the play), but somehow less satisfying.

Lots of nice touches, but it didn't add up to a hill of beans.
