Review Summary :
Avoiding the scary and too much eco-technic porn it manages to be informative and interesting.

Is it possible in 19 years

Firstly this is a really well made film - the creative use of visual effects to inform and underline what is being said is the best I have seen on this subject. The lead character/director is engaging and seeks out some interesting possibilities using only what is already available today.

It avoids the pitfall of so many 'eco' films of being preachy and scary, he doesn't downplay the difficulties but makes an honest attempt to find solutions that could work for his daughter's future.

There is a slight whiff of eco-technic porn about some of the ideas - high-tech mass transport, the continuing prevalence of an internet and some shiny new fun gizmos without considering the resource cost implications, but on the whole he digs up some good ideas - micro-grids transforming the domestic energy landscape, communally owned personal transport, greening (plants) of cities by freeing the space taken by private cars, changes to diet, plus the education of women and their equality as a major driver for reducing resource use.

Overall much better than many attempts at this and  probably achievable if it was not for the structural obstacles. System change requires more than simply sharing your energy with your neighbours (try that in the UK and you'll get a ton of regulation and law down on your head unless you also change the system that governs us).

Is it possible in 19 years? Not without system change first.

Review Summary :
Has a certain charm in a film-schoolish way.

Sharp dialogue, some good photography

The B&W photography is sometimes excellent, occasionally shaky. The dialogue is pretty sharp, especially between the two leads. The weaknesses are that some scenes are simply drawn out too long, and sometimes they have had to use a less than perfect take - presumably due to budget constraints.

Review of "Monsieur Verdoux" by rogerco

Watch out for the comedy opening ensemble scene, The absurd OTT attempted seduction of the woman come to look at a dead wife's house for sale, the atmospheric furniture shop, the whole scene with Lydia (the one we see (but don't see) him murder, the appearances of 'The Girl' who gazes adoringly and knowingly at Verdoux, the beautiful expressions crosing the face of the florist girl as Verdoux is making love on the phone, the final speech in his death-row cell (money santifies)

Ratcatcher

Director : Lynne Ramsay

Film Summary :
Slice of life in Glasgow 1973 seen through the eyes of a 12 year old boy.

Review Summary :
A somewhat dismal slice of poor life film. There is no redemption.

No-one catches a rat

Sometimes hard to understand what people are saying thanks to the thick accents. Well acted and convincingly realistic about how shit some aspects of the early 70s were (not that today may be much better).

The ambiguous ending (did he drown, or were they rehoused?) rather underlines the fact that the film isn't quite sure what it is trying to say. But maybe that's the point. It's just life innit.

The Fantastic Mr Fox

Review Summary :
but is it really satire?

Entertaining Anthropomorphic Satire

A mix of puppetry, stop-motion animation and cartoon, brought to life by voiceovers (many from well known 'stars') with decidedly human characteristics.

If it is satire the targets are never explicitly spelt out - the middle class, social (upward) mobility, industrial farming, the plight of the Palestinians????

The later Isle of Dogs is much better as it is more tightly focussed and avoids much of the excessively cute anthropomorphism of this one.

An enjoyable 90 mins for all that though.
