Like a fine wine

I see we watched this 7 or 8 years ago and I gave it 5/7 stars. Well today it seemed that it really merited 6 stars. It has the occasional joke and is a bit oirish, but underneath that it is an interesting story about a man forced by circumstances to take a fresh look at the community he lives in and the flaws and failings of the people therein.

Did he know all along who he was going to meet on the beach - probably. Amazingly I didn't remember how it ended until it happened and not even then. Still hoping that the redemption wouldn't rely on his last words to his daughter.

A fine Irish film.

Review Summary :
with comedy element and some style

Well paced Brit gangster action

And lovely to see Hugh Grant not playing an annoying toffish character. Possibly his best film.

Totally unsympathetic lead character rather mars it

Vaguely Interesting

The depiction of life in small town China post Mao is interesting but the entire film is spent following this useless loser around which is not at all interesting. He just mooches through life.

Somewhat reminiscent of Ken Loach or Mike Leigh's films providing a slice of life with amateur actors and improvised/workshopped dialogue, but without anyone the audience can identify with (even if we don't actually like them) it fails to engage as a narrative.

Sumptuous to look at, but to what end?

Not a Great Film, but not bad

The photography and mise-en-scene is excellent, luxurious. The story, such as it is, is slightly confused (whose funeral was it, what happened to Ramona). Some laboured comedy - the cardinal more interested in his food recipes than spiritual matters. No hints of the dark side of the face of luxury and privilege.
